Facial Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS): What It Is and Why It Works
Share
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is a technique well-known in the world of physiotherapy and sport since the 1960s. It is used to rehabilitate atrophied muscles, prevent muscle mass loss, and tone specific muscle groups. Applied to the face, it produces a progressive lifting effect without surgery or invasive procedures.
How EMS works on the face
EMS emits very low-intensity electrical impulses (microamps, below the pain threshold) that stimulate motor nerve endings. These transmit the signal to muscle fibres, causing involuntary contractions similar to those produced by voluntary exercise.
The difference from conventional facial exercise is that EMS can selectively activate very specific muscle groups with a precision that voluntary movement cannot achieve.
The key muscles in facial ageing
The loss of facial definition over time is mainly due to three factors: loss of bone volume and subcutaneous fat, reduction of dermal collagen, and progressive atrophy of facial muscles. This third factor is what EMS directly addresses.
The muscles most involved in double chin and loss of jawline definition are:
- Platysma: the wide neck muscle that, when it slackens, directly contributes to a double chin
- Masseter: defines the jaw angle
- Digastric: supports the floor of the mouth
- Buccinator: defines the contour of the cheeks
LED photon therapy: the complement
The facial lifting device combines EMS with low-intensity LED photon therapy. Red light at 630–660 nm stimulates collagen production in dermal fibroblasts, enhancing the firming effect of EMS. While the electrical stimulation works the muscles, the light acts in the dermis improving the elasticity and firmness of the tissue that covers them.
When do results start to show?
Facial EMS does not produce instant results, but changes are progressive and cumulative:
- Weeks 1–2: improved skin tone and circulation, more rested appearance
- Weeks 3–4: first noticeable improvement in jawline definition
- Weeks 6–8: visible reduction of mild double chin and improved facial oval
- Month 3 onwards: consolidated results with maintenance use
"I'm 48 and I'd been looking for something to help with my double chin without surgery for years. I started the EMS device sceptically, but at six weeks the difference in photos is visible. I'm not saying it's like an operation, but for what it costs and with zero risk, the result is very good."

Is it safe for everyone?
Home-use facial EMS works at very low intensities, designed to stimulate without causing discomfort. However, it is not recommended for:
- People with metal implants in the area of application
- People with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices
- Pregnant women
- People with epilepsy or active neurological conditions
If in doubt, consult your doctor before starting.
